Mangaluru: A centuries old, huge peepal tree near Bunts Hostel circle was uprooted and relocated to make way for the road widening works here on Sunday December 9th. The uprooted tree was relocated a few meters away from Bunts Hostel near CV Nayak Hall.

The initial decision of the MCC was to chop down the tree but faced stiff opposition from pro Hindutva outfit which compelled MCC to relocate the tree instead.

The whole shifting operation began at 4 pm on Sunday evening. A massive crane and a multi wheeler trailer truck were employed for shifting the huge tree.

Welcoming the MCC’s move to relocate the tree, VHP district president said that they were not against development. But, they oppose the move of cutting down the tree. “We are happy that the authorities listened to our demands and relocated the tree,” he said.

It is worth mentioning that a banyan tree in Mannagudda was similarly replanted from Mangala Stadium about a decade ago.
