Farangipet street vendors oppose eviction by railway department

Bantwal: Railway officials who had arrived to evict the shops located at the road side of Farangipet Junction here faced stiff opposition from the street vendors there on Thursday December 13th.

The area is filled with a variety of vendors including fruits, vegetables, fish and chicken sellers. But the land belongs to the Railway Department. Hence, about a week ago, the Department had issued notice to the vendors to evict the area.

A week has passed since the notice, yet no street vendor has vacated the place and gram panchayat president Ramlan refused to evict the shops, which created a lot of tension at the spot.

Due to the prevailing confusion the railway officials gave one more hour’s time for the street vendors to vacate the shops on their own. A few of them vacated the place while the rest continued their opposition and began to do business besides the road.

Bantwal rural police have rushed to the location and initiated security measures.
