Mangaluru: The II Additional District and Sessions Court, which also happens to be the designated court for POCSO cases, on Saturday, sentenced a convict to 10 years rigorous imprisonment in connection with sexual harassment of a minor.
Judge B R Pallavi had on Friday convicted Chandrashekhar alias Rajesh after examining 15 witnesses. Special public prosecutor C Venkataramana Swamy represented the victim.
The court also directed the convict to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 of which Rs 7,800 should be given to the victim as compensation. In case of failure to pay the fine amount, the convict would have to undergo six months of additional rigorous imprisonment. Besides, the District Legal Services Authority is also directed to pay compensation to the victim.
According to the charge sheet filed at the Konaje police station, Chandrashekhar and victim were neighbours. The victim, then aged four would often frequent Chandrashekhar’s house to watch television. On July 23, 2016 Chandrashekhar had sexually harassed the girl when she had gone to his house to watch a programme. The issue came to light a few days later when the victim complained of pain in her private parts to her mother. A case was booked under POSCO on the basis of the complaint filed by the victims’ mother against Chandrashekar at Konaje police station.
