Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to constitute committees comprising of the general public, area councillor and officials in all wards to ensure that cleanliness is maintained in the city, said MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer on Thursday Dec 20. He was speaking at a meeting attended by the general public, representatives of NGOs and journalists on new projects for Swacch Sarvekshan at the corporation here.

Initially, a few such committees would be constituted in select wards and it would be extended to all wards in the coming days, he informed.

The solid waste management is still not being done properly in the city, including segregation of dry and wet wastes, he noted.

Mr Nazeer said that the people have to visit https://www.swachhsurvekshan2019.org/CitizenFeedback and select Dakshina Kannada district, Mangaluru City Corporation and answer seven questions positively. People may also download the Swatchata App or call the toll free number 1969 to give their feedback, he explained.

A pot composting initiative

Decision has been taken by MCC to roll out a pot composting initiative conceptualised by Mangaluru Ramakrishna Mission. It is planned to be introduced into at least 10,000 households in the city, informed Nazeer.

While the mission would provide 5,000 units at subsidised rates, the corporaiton would provide another 5,000 units to the residents, he added.

The introduction of the pot composting initiative by the mission has been a great success in eliminating wet waste generation from houses, thus giving a fresh hope to solid waste management. The units would be installed in houses of corporation officials as well as councillors, said the commissioner.
