Caution! Chain snatchers in the guise of CID police

Mangaluru: Some chain snatchers are cheating people in the guise of CID and police and the public needs to be wary of such persons, urged Uma Prashanth, DCP Crime and traffic.

Udupi police have booked two separate cases which involved chain snatching in which the culprits claimed that they are from the CID and police department before committing the offence.

Modus operandi

The culprits gain faith of the pedestrians claiming that there chain snatchers and ask them to take off their valuables with the promise of security. This gang has been active and comes in a black vehicle, informed the DCP.

Recently, a case has been reported at Bunder police station, where the accused successfully diverted the mind of a 72 year old man named Bhagwan Das from Alake. In the melee, he lost a chain and two rings to a person claiming to be CID personnel. People need to be aware and alert, she said.

Caution

Police are there to give protection to people. They never ask to take off the valuables saying there are chain snatchers, assured the DCP

Information to the public

Udupi district police has informed Mangaluru police of a Iranian team which has already committed two acts with similar MO in Udupi district and are travelling towards Mangaluru. Mangaluru police went alert immediately and announced the relevant information to the general public through it PA system in Sagar vehicle. Even though the police had announced of the criminals through PA system, the accused were nonetheless successful in committing the crime and making off with jewelry.
