Mangaluru: Many development works under within Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) have been stopped due to the non-payment of dues to the contractors given charge of the related works and the issue came to light during the last general meeting of the MCC on Wednesday Dec 26th.
The issue on the non-payment of dues to the contractors was raised by corporator Dayananda Shetty who also claimed that due to this most of the developmental works have halted.
MCC opposition leader Premananda Shetty supported the claim and informed that over Rs 50 crore has been kept pending thereby compelling them to stop their work. “As the contractors have not been paid the amount since the last 14 months and hence immediate measures need to be taken to clear the outstanding payment,” he demanded.
Admitting that the payment was indeed remaining to be paid, MCC commissioner Mohammed Nazir explained that the payment will be cleared after the collection of the taxes. Thus the entire process will be completed only by April, he pointed out.
Congress-BJP fight
During the meeting, Congress and BJP corporators quarreled on the disbursing of grants and hence the meeting had to be stopped. However, issues like underground drainage system, solid waste management and other issues were discusses in the meeting earlier.
