Karwar: As many as 48 passengers on board an NWKRTC bus held on for their lives as its driver deliberately rammed the bus into a goods-laden lorry three times while negotiating the curves on the Ghat section of Yellapur taluk in Uttara Kannada district here on Saturday afternoon.
Eshwar, the driver of the bus, which was on its way from Hubballi to Karwar had no other option to slow down the speeding vehicle, other than ramming it into the lorry after its brakes failed in the Ghat section here.
Noticing that the goods-laden lorry travelling ahead of him was travelling at minimal speed the quick-thinking driver realised that he could slow down the speed of bus by colliding against the lorry and safely negotiate the bus on the risky, curvy path down of National Highway 63. While Eshwar did this for three times, the lorry driver, Eranna sensed that something was amiss and did his bit by further slowing down his lorry. With utmost care the duo worked in tandem and held on to the steering while descending the Ghats. Once below the bus managed to bring itself to a halt slowly.
Relieved passengers expressed their gratitude to both the drivers for saving their lives from a possible tragedy. Meanwhile, the front portion of the bus and the hind portion of the lorry suffered dents due to the deliberate collisions.
