Support to fishermen’s protest, M’luru fisheries port comes to a standstill

Mangaluru: In support to the road block protest call given by the Malpe fishermen’s Association, there absolutely no wok done at Mangaluru fisheries port on Sunday Jan 6th.

Several boats including deep sea trawlers and other fishing boats, numbering to almost 1,200 did not venture into the sea for fishing and remained anchored at the fisheries port itself. More than 1,500 people including workers from various organisations went to Udupi to take part in the ‘rasta roko’ there.

The fish market near Hamilton Circle which is always filed with customers and doing brisk business fell quite in support to the protest with workers not opening up their stalls for sale. Even the dry fish markets located besides also chose to remain closed.

Rs 5 crore loss in business

Mangaluru Trawl Boat Fishermen’s Association’s president Nithin Kumar said that due to the protest, Mangaluru fishing sector has suffered a loss of more than Rs 5 crore. In normal days, the usual business done varies from Rs 5-7 crore, he observed.
