Mangaluru: “We need to prevent illegal extraction and transportation of sand to rectify the problem do sand supply. Therefore there is no shortage of sand in Dakshina Kannada district,” said deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil on Wednesday January 9th.
“Temporary permits have been given to contractors in order to set right the sand problem. However, providing permits to over 120 contractors will not solve sand scarcity. I have sent a report to the government that no matter what, sand extraction permits should be limited to a maximum of 120 contractors,” he said.
Lack of coordination
The lack of coordination between departments of mines and geology, police and district administration has failed to prevent illegal sand extraction and transportation, admitted the DC. “The district administration would take all necessary measures to handle this problem in the coming days,” assured the DC.
Mr Senthil appreciated the concept of ‘Brand Mangaluru’ by the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Association and said that Mangaluru already has a good brand image and reputation which should not be tarnished. However, efforts are being made to tarnish the brand in recent years. Media is very essential to counter the bids to tarnish the image and to get a name and fame to our city Mangaluru:
Traffic congestion
Senthil responded to a query on traffic congestion and said, “The root cause for traffic congestion is the public places turning into private places. Besides that, we should stop developing our city for vehicles and do it for the sake of the people. The number of vehicles keeps on increasing but we are not able to widen he roads. Therefore, policy decision needs to be taken to address the problems of traffic congestion,” said the DC.
