Koppal: A video of a police recruit washing clothes, presumably belonging to higher officials went viral on the social media, on Friday stoking a row over the orderly system of the police department of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP).
In the video which appears to have been taken at the KSRP training centre in Koppal, a police recruit can be seen washing clothes and shaving beards of senior officers.
As per the police manual, these tasks are supposed to be done by dhobis and barbers but the recruits, undergoing training at the school are being forced to do odd jobs. Reportedly the recruits alleged harassment from Head Constable H Hanumantappa and a Chief Drill Officer (CDO) at the school.
Meanwhile, police constables, who passed out recently, have also uploaded videos on social media in this regard.
In November 2016, then Chief Minister had announced the scrapping of the orderly system, following complaints that orderlies had all but been reduced to the personal servants of senior officers, made to do every kind of domestic work and even demeaning tasks. The system introduced by the British allowed constables and home guards to be appointed as personal attendants to IPS officers of rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police and above in order to assist the officer with on-field duties.
