Udupi: Soon, Udupi will have a family Court. The government has granted family Court to 13 districts including Udupi, Kodagu and Uttara Kannada districts.

These Courts will begin with basic facilities. The new Court will have an expanse of close to 2,000 sq ft and will have a Court hall, 2 offices and the Judge’s room.

There is opportunity to start the Court in the empty space at the available buildings until the new building is built, but Udupi Court is already facing a lack of space. It will be convenient if all the Courts are at one place. There is a proposal to build a third floor to currently existing Court Complex. This project whose estimated cost is Rs 4.2 crore will be possible only after the government grant is sanctioned.

In this way, it can be estimated that there are around 750 cases in connection to the family Court.

Where there are no family Courts, the existing Courts conduct the marriage cases. With the beginning of family Courts, marriage related cases will be resolved quickly. What is curious is that the divorce rate is directly proportional to higher qualification.

Family cases to be resolved sooner

Family Court primarily handles marriage related cases including dowry, divorce and others. Of the total 17 Courts in Udupi district, there are 12,687 civil, 16,079 criminal cases under investigation, together making a total of 28,766 cases. Of these cases, those which are based on a women’s complaint include 2,761 in civil and 837 in criminal cases, making a total of 3,598 cases. These cases also include marriage related cases.

Proposal for another district Court

There are close to 2,800 cases within the limits of the district Court and there is a proposal for the establishing of another district Court.
