Elderly couple gagged and robbed, man dies of suffocation

Hubballi: Burglars who broke into the house of an elderly couple at Rajnagar under the Ashoknagar police station limits in Hubballi in the wee hours of Tuesday, January 22 assaulted them and killed the owner of the house before fleeing with gold ornaments and cash worth Rs 11.15 lakh.
The owner of the house Venkanna Banavi (72) died of suffocation while his wife Vanamala who escaped from the burglars informed sources.
It is gathered that the gang broke into the house by cutting the window grill around 3 a.m. They assaulted the elderly couple and took away gold and diamond ornaments worth Rs 10.9 lakh and cash of Rs 25,000. After they left, Vanamala, wife Venkanna managed to untie herself and then alerted the police. By the time they arrived, Venkanna had breathed his last.
A case with this regard has been registered with Ashoknagar police.
