Moodbidri:  A decomposed dead body of a  baby monkey was found inside a water drum in Neerude Ballalabail area of Kallamundkur village on January 24, Wednesday.

The villagers stumbled upon the dead body only after a foul smell emanating from the area caused them to look around.

Reportedly the drum, in which the monkey was found was placed near the residence of a Krishnappa Shettigar, who had passed away ten days ago. Following his death, no one was present in the house and hence the dead monkey did not come to the notice of anyone.

Kallamundkur PDO Uggappa Moolya, in-charge medical officer of the local primary health centre Dr Naseeba, veterinarian  Dr Mahesh and others rushed to the spot along with forest officials.

Amid fear of an outbreak of ‘monkey fever’, health officials conducted an autopsy as a precautionary measure and clarified that no ticks were in the area where the monkey was found dead.

They also opined that this might have been an accidental death and there was no need for any panic regarding Kyasanoor Forest disease as no one has developed any symptoms of the disease in the taluk.
