Mangaluru: The timely intervention of the fire and emergency department averted a major fire disaster in the district on Friday afternoon, February 1st.
The incident
Around 3 pm in the afternoon, thick smoke was seen arising from the basement of the Alfa Towers, a multi-storied building on Balmatta Road. The smoke caused panic in the locality. Rumors started to spread claiming that a gas cylinder had exploded in a restaurant operating the basement of the building. However, the fire personnel rushed to the location, quickly located the source of the fire and doused it.
“Initial enquiry shows that the fire was caused due to short circuit in the diesel generator, which was housed in the basement,” informed a fireman.
The incident resulted with no human casualty. Except for the diesel generator set and electrical box which were completely gutted in the fire, there is no significant loss or damage to property.
