Weather | Heat begins before its usual term
Mangaluru: Normally in Karavali, the heat begins during the first week of March. But this time, due to drastic changes in the weather, the heat has begun in the first week of February itself.
The average temperature in the district is showing signs of increase by the day and the maximum temperature is reaching close to 37 degree Celsius. According to the experts in the weather department, the current condition of the weather is expected to continue for a few more days.
People suffering under the fierce heat are depending on the relief provided by cool drinks. Thus the demand for cold drinks has increased. The sales at juice centres have caught pace. At some places, watermelon, pineapple and cucumber slices have been laid in glass containers for sale.
Rise in prices
At some shops in the city, the price for ‘Ela Neeru’ or Sesame water has also increased. Earlier, the drink which cost Rs 30 is now being sold at Rs 32. Hybrid Sesame water has increased to Rs 35.
Heat before its usual term
“Normally in Karavali, the temperatures begin to rise during the first week of March. But since there is a surface based storm, the term for the rise in heat has been proponed. Also, there will be a rise in the average temperature. This weather of heat and cloudy skies shall persist for another few more days,” informed Gavaskar Sanga, State Natural Disaster Management Centre scientist
Demand for cold drinks
“With the rise in the temperature, there is a rise in demand for cool drinks. At a few places, the prices for cold drinks have been increased,” says Vishwanath, Sesame water merchant
