500 houses to be constructed for slum residents

G+2 flat at the cost of Rs 28.61 crore
Mangaluru: The dream of owning an own house by slum dwellers who are without their own roof in the city, will soon be realized. This is so because, land has already been identified for a G+2 flat at Kannur in the city. The building will be built at the cost of Rs 28.61 crore and will host 500 houses. The construction work is expected to begin soon.
Under the prime minister’s Awaaz Yojna (home for all) the houses will be built at survey number 17 in Kannur village. The construction work will be carried on behalf of Karnataka State Slum Development Council and the dream of the poor people of owning an own house will be realized in one-and-a-half year.
G+2 model
Of the total area of 11 acre, the 500 houses will be built in an area of 4 acres. There will be 41 blocks with 12 houses each. The construction of the hoses will be in the G+2 model thus having a ground floor, plus two floors. Every floor will have four houses. The total area of a house is 250 sq mt. Every house has a hall, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, toilet and a balcony. Already, more than 3,000 applications have been submitted for an own house under this scheme. The beneficiaries will be selected by the corporation. The selected beneficiaries will get the opportunity to own a house.
Every house costs Rs 5.50 lakh
Every house that will be built here will cost Rs 5.50 lakh. Of this, Rs 1.50 lakh will be provided by the union government. Rs 2 lakh will be provided by the state government for those belonging to the schedule cast / schedule tribe and Rs 1.2 lakh for general category. The remaining amount must be provided by the beneficiaries at 10% for those belonging to (SC/ST) and at 15% for the general category. For the remaining amount, bank loan is available through the Slum Board, informed Manjunath, Executive Engineer (Mangaluru) of the Karnataka Slum Development Authority. The foundation stone for the house construction will be laid next week and the work is expected to be completed by the One-and-a-half year time period provided by the government.
8 slums in the city
Under the Rajeev Awaaz scheme, a total of 8 slum areas have been identified in the city. The identified slum areas are Urwa, Matadakini, Kodialhuttu, Dongarakeri, Kanduka, Gattihitlu, Hogebazaar, Kavoor and Jyoti. The total population here is 3,234. There are 718 families residing in these 8 areas, but there is no information regarding the number of families that have their own roof.
Fast work
“The land has been finalized for the construction of 500 homes in G+2 model for the slum dwellers of Kannur village and the tender process has been conducted. The house construction work will be started soon in the coming days and thus, the work for providing an own house for the poor will be taken. The construction work will be done under the Prime Minister’s Awaaz scheme by the Karnataka Slum Development Council,” said MLA D Vedavyas Kamath
Preparations have been done
