ACB raids residence of Udupi RTO arrested on bribery charge, recovers Rs 70.18 lac

Udupi: Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths seized Rs 70.18 cash and other asset-related documents during raids conducted at the residence of Udupi regional transfer officer (RTO) R M Varnekar, who happens to be out on bail in connection with a bribery case.
The officials have claimed that they have found property documents of multiple flats and plots in the raid along with two bank locker keys and a ornaments.
Vernekar had been caught red-handed while accepting bribe from a Vignesh inorder to issue documents relating to his car insurance. The complainant, Vignesh’s car had been burnt during the fire incident at Aer-India air show held in Bengaluru recently and had approached the RTO to procure the documents related to the car insurance. Vignesh filed a complaint with the ACB as Varnekar allegedly demanded a bribe to issue the required documents.
According ACB sleuths laid a trap and arrested Varnekar along with another Udupi RTA employee identified as Mustafa on March 16. The duo, who had been remanded to judicial custody secured bail on March 18.
