Mother commits suicide after strangling her infant son

Bengaluru: Woman strangled her two-year-old son to death and then committed suicide by hanging at their residence in Bengaluru’s Kalyan Nagar.

The deceased woman is identified as Prathima Mangalurkar (28), wife of Sathish Shetti, who works as a first division assistant in the excise department and their son as Saarthvik S (2). The couple was originally from Yellapura in Uttara Kannada district.

The incident took place on Saturday but was brought to the notice of the police after Satish was unable to contact his wife. Mr Shetti tried contacting his wife multiple times on her mobile but there was no response from the other side. However, when he reached home after work at 9pm, he found his wife and child dead.

Mr Shetti immediately informed his neighbours post which Chandra Layout police were informed. The police rushed to the location and transferred the corpses to Victoria Hospital for autopsy.

According to the police, Sathish was on election duty on the day of the tragedy and Prathima is suspected to be suffering from depression.

The parents of the Prathima were informed of the incident and they have informed the police that the couple had married 4 years back and had no issues between them. They have made no allegations against Sathish.

Prathima’s mother Vidya stated that she had spoken to her daughter on the phone at around 3pm on Saturday and nothing seemed amiss then.
