Mangaluru/Subrahmanya/Kadaba: Due to the surface storm witnessed in the inner areas of the state’s southern regions, good rain was experienced at various locations in the district on Friday.
Along with lightning and thunder, strong winds and rain was recorded at Subrahmanya, Kadaba and surrounding areas. Also, a rain of hailstone was experienced here. Due to the strong winds, trees have been uprooted at several places. Cultivators have suffered huge losses with the wind uprooting rubber, coconut and areca nut trees.
Two hours of continuous rain was experienced. Various fallen trees have brought down power cables and electricity poles which supply electricity to Kadaba-Subrahmanya rural areas. Hence, power supply to Subrahmanya and other areas has been cut. Telephone and mobile services are dysfunctional. The sheets on roof tops of the houses have been blown away.
Four-laning work is under progress between Kumaradhara-Kashikatte in Subrahmanya town for which the road had been dug up. Hence, there was no passage for water to drain away and thus the water flooded the road causing much trouble to motorists. The road has been overrun by sludge.
Due to the lack of drainage at Adi Subrahmanya, the roads were inundated with water barging into the roadside shops located here. Even in the main market area, the mixture of mud and water has flown into low lying areas putting the people’s life out of gear. Along with the rain , lightning and thunder, a rain of hailstone was experienced for 45 minutes at Panja, Yenekallu, Guttigaru, Harihara, Nadugallu, Madappadi, Balugodu, KalmakaruEnmuru, Karikkala and other areas.
Strong winds and rain has caused much destruction of several areca nut cultivations and houses in Bellare and Peruvaje village. 15 minutes of good rain was reported from Puttur.
This is the first time that such intensity of rain and wind has been experienced in Subrahmanya and its surrounding areas during the summer. However, the rains have brought a much required relief from the scorching heat being borne here. Many people were gathering the hailstones while few others were finding pleasure by photography through their mobiles.
