Sasihithlu: Since a few months, severe sand erosion was being witnessed at the estuary near Munda region of Sasihithlu beach, now a shop constructed by the panchayat has completely fallen to the ground and is on the verge of becoming a part of the river.
Munda beach of Haleangadi GP was recognized internationally due to surfing and hence the panchayat had implemented several basic facility projects here through its beach development committee. Three shops were a part of this. It has provided much convenience to the tourists.
The estuary where Shambhavi and Nadini rivers meet has been experiencing acute river erosion since a few months due to which huge trees, benches, tourist rest area and electricity poles have already become part of the river. Now the shop also have embraced the river. The loss incurred has been estimated to be around Rs 5 lakh.
If the present condition persists, the remaining two shops, restroom, and the vacation spot of the beach will also be claimed by the river, feels the panchayat expressing fear.
Problem due to dredging
Huge scale dredging is being conducted at Nadini river close to the jetty constructed near the beach and since the water flow is restricted near Pavanje bridge along the national highway. If Shambhavi River gains speed, it will hinder the flow of Nadini River and lead to river erosion, opinion local fishermen.
