Panambur: ‘Tar balls’ on the shores

Mangaluru: The tar balls and other garbage disposed by ships is getting amassed along the coast and the beauty of tourist attractions like Panambur beach is getting affected.

The tar globules in the water are getting stuck to the bodies of the tourists who dare venture into the waters here.  Though there is facility provided at the New Mangalore Port to dispose the waste, the ships tend to dispose their waste at the sea to escape from paying the fee. When the waves start to get rough in the sea, the waste gets carried and dumped along the coast and the sea birds fall prey to this. Previously, same issue was faced for a couple of days at Tannirbavi beach.

“Tar balls are drained from the ships. The concerned department, the Pollution Control Board must initiate proper action against this,” said Yatish Baikampady, CEO, Panambur Beach Development Committee
