Mangaluru: According to the prediction of the Head of Karnataka State Natural Disasters Monitoring Center G S Srinivas Reddy, the cyclone expected to be created in Bay of Bengal will also affect Karnataka’s coast. Due to this, good rainfall is expected in coastal Karnataka and southern interior Karnataka on April 29, 30, and May 1. “However, If the cyclone becomes stronger, even monsoon might get delayed,” he predicted.

The southern side of Bay of Bengal is facing a drop in atmospheric pressure which will likely give rise to a cyclone. With enough momentum, the cyclone can have an effect on the monsoon winds too.

Low pressure and cyclone

The low pressure is located a little away from Tamil Nadu coast and inside the Bay of Bengal. It has the potential to grow into a cyclone but the clear image discerning the situation will only be available on April 27. If in case there is a cyclone then it will scatter away the clouds due which the clouds will need time to come together again. Consequently, it may delay the arrival of monsoon by a couple of weeks.

Good rainfall

The low pressure area can cause good rainfall coupled with strong winds in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. Meanwhile, a trough has emerged over the Arabian sea indicating the likelihood of rain along with strong winds during the next couple of days in coastal and southern interior regions of Karnataka, infer the Meteorological Department.

Less rain since three years

Statistics from the department indicate that Karavali has experienced less than normal rainfall during the monsoon season since 2014 to 2017. Normally, Karavali must receive 3083 mm of rain during the monsoon season.

Anxious fishermen

Trawl Boat association President Nithin Kumar spoke with ‘Udayavani’ and said, “The fishing labourers from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh have reported back to work just two days back after casting their votes and a few boats have sailed  towards Maharashtra on a fishing expedition. If there is a cyclone in Tamil Nadu, an alert will be issued throughout the coast, then the fishing trip will have to be cut short and even more loss will be incurred,” he explained.

Cyclone of ‘62

The possibility of a cyclone during April month is improbable. But in 1962 and 66, same type of cyclone was witnessed in Chennai, inform experts for the Weather Department.
