Mangaluru: The decision regarding water rationing will be taken on April 30th, informed DK in-charge minister U T Khader after he visited Thumbay dam on Sunday April 28th and decided not to resort to water rationing for another two days.
“If we continue the existing system of water rationing such as providing continuous supply of water for four days and cutting the supply for 2 days in a week, then the stored water can be utilized uo to June 15th. We need to adopt water rationing to prevent a drought-like situation in the district. However, the decision in this regard will be taken after examining the water level on April 30th,” he explained.
Cooperation from the people
“People should use water carefully and not waste it. Thumbay vented dam has a storage capacity of 7 meters of water, but we are storing water up to 6 meters only. If we store 7 meters of water, then more land will get submerged. Therefore, a meeting will be convened shortly with those families who will lose their land and convince them with proper compensation,” informed Khader.
Prevention of floods
Informing that several areas have been identified in DK and Kodagu which are expected to receive heavy rains Mr Khader said, “As the people in Kodagu district suffered heavy losses due to the rains last year, a meeting will be convened in Sampaje shortly with the aim to decide on precautionary measures required to be taken. We have already informed the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to be prepared to face possible floods,” he said.
