Bengaluru: Tomato constitute a major part of our daily diet, however, people may now think twice before using it liberally owing to the surge in prices.

Available at Rs 10-15 kg earlier tomatoes are now priced at Rs 50-60 per kg, which is a four-fold hike in its prices.

Reportedly, the local tomato production has witnessed a dip.

As there are no tomatoes in the state, the tomato seller are forced to bring tomatoes from Nashik in Maharashtra and that is why tomato prices have shot up. A big quantity also gets damaged during transportation of tomato during summer, informed sources.

Last week, the prices were around Rs 10-15 and now the rates are around Rs 40-50 kilogram, but after the rain, the tomatoes are damaged, therefore the people are angry and not purchasing tomatoes, said a tomato seller.
