POCSO case: Two sentenced to 20 years RI for rape

Mangaluru: Two persons have been sentenced to 20 years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) by the second district additional and special POCSO court of the city. The convicts were accused of raping a girl student of a college, who was returning home after her classes.

The convicts are Sachin Kumar (22), a resident of Koyyur Koppadabailu Mane of Belthangady taluk and K T Mathew alias Manu (24), a resident of Laila Patladi.

The convicts were also fined Rs 20,000 of which Rs 18,000 would be paid to the victim. Failure to pay the fine will attract an additional sentence of 6 months.

The incident

On March 7, 2015, the convicts had asked the victim to board their car assuring her that they will drop her home, but instead, they raped her. The then circle inspector of Belthangady B R Lingappa submitted the chargesheet to the court after due investigation.

The court examined 23 records and 19 witnesses post which, Judge B R Pallavi held the accused guilty of their crime sentenced them under IPC section 376(D). Public prosecutor C Venkataramanaswamy argued in favour of the prosecution.
