Mangaluru: In a major relief to commuters, the work on Thokkottu flyover which was going on at a snail’s pace for nearly eight years now has gained momentum and the flyover is likely to be opened for public use on June 10.

Various works such as asphalting of the flyover, construction of protective walls, leveling with concrete mix, etc are going on simultaneously and would be completed in next five days time, said Navayuga Company’s chief project director, Shankar Rao.

Following this, a 7-day time period is required for curing, said Rao adding that the flyover will be open for vehicular movement on June 10. He also said that the service road would be repaired and obstacle-free vehicular traffic will be ensured.

The flyover project saw several impediments during its execution the latest being the financial crisis faced by Navayuga company. Several protests were staged against the inordinate delay and the resulting inconvenience caused to the public. Local leaders had even warned the contractors of action if they fail to complete the project on time.

At a meeting chaired by union minister for highways, Nitin Gadkari alongside BJP MP Nalin Kateel and local MLAs earlier in February Navayuga company was given a May 31 deadline to complete the flyover works. A Rs 55 crore cheque was also handed over to them to ensure the speedy execution.
