Udupi: If there is not rain in another 4-5 days, the situation of lack of drinking water being currently face in Udupi city may worsen. The water level at Baje dam across Swarna River which is the lifeline of the city has dropped considerably in the last two days. A major drop in water level was witnessed during the beginning of May itself. The acute shortage in water resource pushed water supply to once in six days. At some place, water was supplied after a gap of 10 days also.
Streams running dry
Since the flow of water had come to a halt, work on pumping water to Baje dam from big streams was started on May 5th. But it took 4-5 days for the water reach the city. Hence, the city was divided into 6 divisions which were supplied with water once in 6 days on rotation basis. Water was also supplied through water tankers to residence located in elevated areas.
But now, the water at the streams also is depleting. Since a few days, water is being pumped from the water hole near Puttige Math through 3 pumps. On Wednesday, there was water which could be pumped for only 8 hours. This water level may further fall on Thursday. Municipality, MLA’s and municipality members are supplying water through water tankers.
