Mangaluru: The city police of the crime department have successfully busted another huge cricket betting network in the city, arrested 5 persons and seized Rs 54 lakh in cash. The accused were running their network through an app.
The arrested are identified as Ashok (40) from Adyar, Uday (40) from Kulshekar, Ravi (35) from Pandeshwar, Radhakrishna (35) from Vamanjoor and Ditin (30). The police operation was conducted based on the information provided by the public regarding the betting being facilitated through an app.
Karunakar as residing in Dubai and running the world cup cricket betting business through an app from there. He used to visit Mangaluu twice in a week, collect money in connection to the betting and clear off payments. Ashok was the chief agent of Karunakar in Mangaluru and he had made the prior an admin of the app and was conducting the business through him. Uday and Ravi used to collect money through agents.
Based on the definite information from the public, Ashok, Radhakrishna and Ditin were arrested on Saturday within Kankanady City police station limits and Rs 2 lakh was seized from them. Based on the information revealed by the arrested, Uday and Ravi were arrested within Bunder police station limits and Rs 52 lakh in cash was seized from them.
The operation was conducted under the direction of Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil, guidance of DCP Hanumantraya and Laxmiganesh led by Police Inspector Shivaprakash R Naik, PSI Kabbal Raj, ASI Mohan, Ashit, Raja, Mani and Vishwanath.
World Cup: 5th operation
The police operation conducted in the city on Monday is the 5th operation conducted by the city police against cricket betting in the city since the beginning of the Cricket World Cup. As the same time, the amount of Rs 54 lakh seized during the operation is the largest amount seized regarding the crime in the city till now, informed Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil with ‘Udayavani’.
