42-yr-old man jumps into river while being escorted by police dies

Mangaluru: A 42-year-old man who was being escorted by a police constable died after he jumped into the river at Kuloor Bridge here on Sunday night.

The body of the deceased, identified as Muneer was recovered from Bengre area after a day-long search on Monday evening.

On Sunday night, Muneer’s relative Mohammad approached Mangaluru North Police Station at around 11 pm requesting help to trace Muneer, who he claimed had left home in a disturbed state of mind following a fight with his wife.

He informed the police that Muneer had left in a goods auto.

On the basis of this information, the police managed to intercept Muneer at Haleangady check post.

A constable escorted Muneer in the goods auto on the way back but upon reaching Kuloor bridge, Muneer abruptly stopped the auto and jumped into the river.
