Mangaluru: “There are space constraints at Destitute Rehabilitation Centre. The local tahsildar has assured to take measures to grant 15 acres of land close-by to construct a rehabilitation centre. Once the land is granted, a Bengaluru model rehabilitation centre can be constructed. I expect the Revenue department look into the land requirement on priority. If laxity is shown, I will have to direct them through legal procedures,” said Lokayukta Justice Vishwanath Shetty after paying a visit to the Destitute Rehabilitation Centre at Pacchanady on Saturday, July 20.
“Rehabilitation centre has been made for the destitute. Due to various life situations, people succumb to begging. Hence, there should not be any kind of human rights violation. The destitute should not face any kind of difficulties. The utmost priority of the government is to bring these destitute into the mainstream of the society. There are 11 rehabilitation centres across the state. Mangaluru is one of them. Revenue department should co-operate in providing land and good facilities for the inmates,” he said.
Destitute to get wages
“As per directions, the daily wage for jail inmates is fixed at Rs 175 per day. Excluding their daily expenses of Rs 100, Rs 75 should be given to the inmates as daily wages. Similarly, directions were issued for the inmates of the rehabilitation centre, so that they can earn money. While leaving the rehabilitation centre, their earnings can help them sustain,” said Mr Shetty.
