Uppinangady: Three rogue elephants strayed into Aithooru village in Kadaba taluk and destroyed crops as well as pipes and sprinklers used in the plantations.
Arecanut, banana, and coconut trees belonging to agriculturists – Mohanchandra, Thammayya Gowda and Marvathadka Monappa Gowda – were stomped resulting in losses to them.
Aithooru Gram Panchayat President Sathish lamented that the villagers were scared to venture outside as the herd of three elephants stayed put on the periphery of the forest during daytime and entered villages during the night. A complaint was lodged with the forest department.
Following the complaint, forest officials with help from local residents managed to successfully chase the herd of elephants back to the forest on Tuesday late night.
