Mangaluru: “Educational institutions should take all kinds of necessary steps to prevent dengue,” said Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sasikanth Senthil urging educational institutions to take immediate steps to mosquito breeding and control dengue. He was speaking at the meeting called for the principals and headmasters and headmistresses of colleges and schools, with the aim to discuss the implementation of dengue control campaign in schools and colleges.
“Dengue is an easily controllable disease. Everyone thinks that these mosquitoes breed from gutter or dirty water, but in this case these mosquitoes breed from fresh water. It is a low-flying, day-biting mosquito. Hostels, work places, schools are more conducive for dengue mosquitoes to breed,” informed the DC.
“People should understand about this disease. We should not allow fresh water to accumulate in terrace, pots and in the surroundings of our houses which gives scope for the mosquitoes to breed. We should take immediate steps to hunt larvae,” he urged the gathering.
“Direct the parents to send their children with their bodies fully covered or apply neem oil. Dengue is very much avoidable as we have reached to critical mass level and we need to control dengue by hunting these larvae,” advised Mr Senthil.
“We will give three days’ time for all the educational institutions to clear all the stagnant water and kill the larvae existing in the surroundings of the educational institutions. Ask students to take a round of the school to release all the water collections. After three days, we will send our team to review. If we find larvae, we will take penal action on the institution,” warned the DC.
“Every child is an ambassador. If we teach children to hunt these larvae and create awareness, they will definitely protect their parents. Teachers should create some activity or show some videos to create awareness about this larvae and dengue,” said the DC.
Guppy fish drive
“There are many open wells. These mosquitoes breed on the surface of the water. It is better to put guppy fish in to the well or make sure the well is disturbed every now and then. In coming days we will conduct guppy drive,” answered the DC to a question put forth by a teacher regarding open well.
