Udupi: Superintendent of Police Nisha James on Monday urged social media users to refrain from circulating misleading messages as such messages tend to disturb social harmony.
Pointing out at several cases where mistaken identities, based on such baseless messages have led to mob attacks, the Udupi SP warned of stringent action against those who take law into their hands.
“Systematic attempts are being made to stir unrest by uploading fake photographs of people and projecting them as child kidnappers. The police have found that such messages are being circulated by miscreants settled in foreign countries with the sole objective of destroying peace in society,” she stressed and urged people to immediately inform police about any suspicious child-lifters in the village.
James further added that the Police Department was empowered to register suo motu case against trouble mongers who spread false messages on social media.
