Stagnant water everywhere; Public fears spread of epidemic diseases

Surathkal: Rain water and dirty water has collected and remained stagnant in gutters and low lying areas and have become a prominent mosquito breeding center in Sadasgiva Nagar, Minakaliya and other areas within Surathkal limits which is a sub-zone of Mangaluru City Corporation.
Delay in action
As part of the precautionary action against dengue, although the public has submitted many complaints regarding the lack of cleanliness in their respective areas, allegations are being heard that the corporation is making much delay in taking action.
Garbage is being disposed recklessly at public spaces. Garbage has gathered along various roads at Tadambail, Kulai, Katipalla and other areas.
The district administration is saying that cleanliness needs to be maintained. But, what can be done if copious amount of water remains stagnant in the vicinity of a house. It is difficult to clean it. The corporation needs to take proper action against this, opinions Ram, a local.
Unscientific plan implemented for the flow of rain water
The facility provided for the flow of rain water at Baikampady is unscientific. Even though there is a gutter, the water does not flow. And after the concretizing of the road here, the water has remained stagnant on either sides of the road giving rise to the formation of algae.
The 15 years old storm drain at the 1st cross in Sasdashiva Nagar in Surathkal falling within the limits of the corporation was repaired by the corporation last year. However the newly created drain is both in convenient and unscientific. Post the repair work, water is not flowing freely in the drain, instead it remains stagnant and has become a mosquito breeding centre. With the inconsistent rainfall, water is remaining stagnant in pools along rod sides, gutters and low lying areas and the locals are in a constant fear of a dengue outbreak.
Responsibly maintain cleanliness
Dengue larva control programmes are being organized throughout the corporation limits. Public too must take the responsibility of maintaining cleanliness in the vicinity of their homes – Madhu, Officer, Environment Divisions, MCC
