50 SDRF, 200 Fire Force personnel deployed to undertake rescue operations in North Karnataka

Bengaluru: The state Fire and Emergency Services Department has deployed more than two hundred personnel for rescue operations in flood-hit areas in Belagavi, Bagalkot, Raichur, and Yadgir districts.

The fifty State Disaster Response Force was also deployed in Belagavi and Kalaburagi regions.

Precautionary measures also have been taken and personnel have been deployed in Bedakihal, Nippani, Kudachi, Harogeri, Raddarhatti, Jugula and Ainapura in Chikkodi Taluk in the same district.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department on Tuesday advised fisherpeople along the entire western coast to not venture into the sea for the next five days due to the likelihood of strong winds reaching up to 40 km per hour to 50 km per hour.

An orange alert was issued for most parts of the southwestern coast in Karnataka Maharashtra and Goa for the next three days.

The road along National Highway-4 which connects the cities of Pune and Bengaluru cracked after a landslide took place following a severe downpour. The incident took place on Monday night when the rains were lashing along the Karnataka-Maharashtra border. The stretch usually has constant vehicular movement, unfortunately, with the disaster that took place on Monday night, the traffic came to a halt.

Hundreds of villages in North Karnataka were inundated the following release of over 2 lakh cusecs of water from Koyna dam in neighbouring Maharashtra on Sunday and torrential rainfall in the region prompting the administration to rope in the Army for relief works.

Chief minister B S Yediyurappa reviewed the situation in the region and would undertake an aerial survey of the affected areas on Monday, officials said.

So far, no loss of life has been reported, official sources said adding the administration was on alert.

At least, five districts– Belagavi, Bagalkot, Raichur, Vijayapuram and Yadgir have been badly affected by the swollen Krishna river, Malaprabha, Markandeya river and a few other rivulets.
