Pumpwell arrests: Conspirator cheated his driver as well

Mangaluru: Reportedly, the police have found that T Sam Peter (53) who used to pose as an officer of a central criminal investigation agency when robbing people. Apparently, the accused had defrauded his driver as well to the extent of Rs 50 lakh.

Based on the information that a gang of robbers led by Peter had arrived in the city to settle certain illegal dealing, the cops rushed to the lodge located at Pumpwell here where the accused were staying and arrested them on Friday. The police had found out that Moideen alias Cherian (70) from Kulur and S K Abdul Latif (59) were planning a robbery.

Driver duped

Peter had appointed a person from Padubidri as driver for his car and had also managed to make the driver believe that Peter had huge assets and that he personally knows several union ministers and cine actors. He then convinced the driver to sell his house and raise loan and hand over the amount of Rs 50 lakh to him. However, when the driver sought his money back, Peter not only blackmailed him but also threatened him by stating that he knew senior police officers as well.

But when the driver came to know that Peter and his gang members had been arrested, the driver came to the city and explained to the cops on how he had been duped.

It is learnt that of the eight-member gang arrested on Friday night, Kulur Cherian had arrived here to discuss with the gang about his property and money issues. Latif from Falnir had introduced Cherian to Peter and the police reached the spot when the discussions were on.

The nabbed accused have been sent to five days in police custody and more information is expected to be revealed in the coming days.
