Mangaluru: The official team from the centre arriving to carry out a study on food related damage by visiting the flood affected districts in the state will not be visiting Dakshina Kannada district. This has created a fear for those in the district who are awaiting compensation for the huge losses that they have incurred due to natural calamity.

The team which arrived on Aug 24th, visited various locations within three days and carried out damage estimation. Although the other flood affected districts in the state have been included in the tour list of the team from the union, DK district is conspicuously missing. The official’s team held discussions with the chief minister in Bengaluru and gathered information regarding the extent of the damage in state. On Aug 25 and 26th, they visited Belagavi followed by Bagalkot, Gadag and Dharwad and on Aug 27th, they visited Kodagu district and proceeded towards Bengaluru.

No Dakshina Kannada district

DK district has faced floods which have not been faced in the recent decades. Belthangady taluk has suffered immense losses.

As per the survey by the district administration, basic facilities worth more than Rs 750 crore have been damaged. 944 houses and 1,229.66 hectares of crop has been decimated. The damaged suffered by vented dams is to the tune of hundreds of crores of rupees. 222 schools have been damaged. 105 families need to be relocated and be provided with permanent residence. Considering all this, a total loss of more that Rs 2,000 crore has been incurred.

The expectation of the victims that the team of officials from centre will visit DK district too and thereby provide more compensation to rebuild and restart the destroyed existence here has been to no avail.

Will request explanation

The flood damage study tour by the team of officials from the centre was organized on the state secretary’s level. Explanation will be requested from the officials regarding the exclusion of Dakshina Kannada district. Talks will be held for the officials to visit DK district also – Nalin Kumar, MP
