No inspector at cyber police station!

Mangaluru: Even while social media is growing as an effective media, instances of cyber crimes are also increasing by the day. In this backdrop, there is no qualified inspector at the cyber police station in Mangaluru to conduct cyber crime investigation!

There has been no permanent police inspector here since 5 months; however, a person was appointed two days ago. The two sub-inspectors at the police station were transferred in June and presently, their posts still lie vacant.

Important posts too remain vacant

Savita Teja, who was the police inspector at the cyber police station, was transferred during the Lok Sabha election process and Satish was appointed as replacement to the vacant post during the election. Once the elections concluded, Satish returned back to his mother unit (ACB) on June 20^th. Since Savitra Teja had been transferred normally to Bengaluru (ISD), he did not return. Chendrashekharayya, who was the SI here, has been transferred to Surathkal police station while another SI Kumareshan has been transferred to Panambur police station. Presently, the station has 18 remaining personnel.

There is information that two days back, a police inspector with work experience in Mangaluru has been appointed for the cyber police station, informed Police Commissioner Dr| Harsha P S to “Udayavani”.

2-3 new cases every day

According to the statistics of the station, presently there are 185 cases pending here. The police inspector is the investigating officer and the post has remained vacant since 5 months. Daily, there are 2-3 cases relating cyber crimes getting registered here and the list just keeps increasing.

Recently, immediate investigation was required for a case during which, the acting commissioner inevitably gave the responsibility to Bunder (Mangaluru North) police station police inspector Govindaraju. But since he was already responsible for Bunder police station, he could not afford to give complete concentration to the cyber police station at the same time.

Qualified officials required

The previous police commissioner Sandeep Patil had written a letter to the central office regarding the appointing of an inspector for the cyber police, and presently, even I’m going to write a letter regarding this concern. There is information that a person has been appointed for the post. But it is vital that a person who knows computer science or information technology be appointed for the investigation of cyber crimes. Technology keeps changing quickly.
