Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat and Public Education department jointly celebrated district-level Teachers’ Day at Town Hall in the city on Thursday, September 5. The programme was inaugurated by former minister U T Khader along with MLC Bhojegowda.
Speaking on the occasion, retired principal of Besant Women’s College Dr M Prabhakar Joshi said, “There is an assumption that quality teaching has come down, but it is not true. The teachers have increased, teachers’ base is increased. We cannot celebrate Teachers’ Day beyond academics, as there are lots of expectations from the teachers. We urge the government to create a commission to assess the condition of the teachers. There are several schools without proper facilities and staff rooms and fill the vacant posts, which are up to 75%. We urge to eradicate contract teachers. The government needs to take immediate steps.”
MLA U T Khader said, “There are several demands from teachers. I assure that the same will be discussed with the education minister so that the demands are fulfilled.”
Retired teachers, national and state award winning teachers were felicitated on the occasion.
