Kundapur: First triple talaq case booked; Husband arrested

Kundapur: A woman filed a complaint against her husband at Kundapur city police station on Sunday alleging that her husband had given her triple talaq. This is the first case to be booked against triple talaq in Udupi district so far.
Alfiya Akhtar (29), resident of Mudugopadi has filed the complaint against her husband and his parents. The accused in the complaint include the husband Haneef Syed (32), his father Abbas Syed, mother Jaitun and elder sister Ayesha, all residents’ of Hiriyadka.
Incident synopsis
According to Alfiya, her marriage with Haneef was solemnized at Moodugopady village on July 4 this year. During the time of the marriage, he family of her husband had demanded for payment of dowry amounting to Rs 5 lakh however, her parents could afford to pay only Rs 2 lakh.
“Because of this, my husband and his family members used to harass me on a regular basis. On August 15, my husband sought to divorce me by uttering the word ‘talaq’ thrice,” alleged Alfiya in her complaint.
Triple talaq is illegal
As of July 31 2019, the central government amended the act and banned triple talaq and accordingly, a case under Muslim Women’s Protection of Divorce Rights Act, dowry harassment and family harassment provisions has been registered in the town police station against the accused based on the complaint.
As per latest updates, the husband Haneef Syed has been arrested by the police.
