Mangaluru: The state mines and geology minister C C Patil has directed the DC’s of the twin districts to take necessary actions to solve the sand problem being faced in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district.

A meeting concerning the sand problem being faced in the coastal districts was held under the leadership of Mr Patil in Bengaluru and was attended by the officials, MLAs and MPs of both the districts.

Discussion regarding various issues concerning the sand problem was discussed during the meeting including a possible opportunity to be provided to conduct a study regarding the feasibility of increasing the number of permits given for sand mining in CRZ areas and action to solve the technical issue concerning sand extraction in non-CRZ areas. The minister asked the DCs to submit a report in this connection to the secretary of the mines and geology department. During the meeting, discussion was also held regarding the provision of permits for crushers in Udupi district.

It is said that the MLAs of either districts expressed unhappiness regarding no response from the government concerning the sand problem and the non-provision of solution to the claimed problem under the guise of law. Based on this very issue, MLAs will be holding talks with the CM on Friday.
