Udupi: With the lack of minimum education qualification to get directly appointed by the government, the jobs of 225 D group employees of backward classes working at the student’s hostel as outsourced employees in DK and Udupi districts may lose their jobs.

These workers have been working at a measly salary since a decade. Now, the department has asked them to not to report back to duty from Oct 1st onwards and thus, the contract workers are facing trouble.

114 hostels in the twin districts

There are altogether 114 hostels functioning under the Backward Classes Welfare Department in the twin districts including 41 in Udupi and 73 in DK. Workers for cleaning, cooking have been outsourced with 89 individuals working in Udupi and 136 working in DK.

Direct appointment

Last year, the staffs for the D group posts were directly appointed by the government under the guideline of having passed 10th std. Due to this guideline regarding education, the outsourced employees could not participate in the direct appointment.

Protests were held

The employees had held protest in Bengaluru against the new appointment rule by the government. As a result, they were given the opportunity to work for another year. Now, the department has passed the order that the outsourced employees refrain from working.

July salary still pending

These workers have been paid their salaries up to the month of June. The workers at BCM hostel in Udupi worked the whole month of July with the hopes that the government might continue their services. They have not yet received their salaries.

It has come to my notice that the outsourced employees for the D group posts have been removed and opportunity has been given to those who have been appointed directly to the posts. Talks in this concern will be held with the Backward Classes Welfare Department Commissioner and secretary. It will be brought to the notice of the Chief Minister – Kota Srinivas Poojary, minister

136 persons are presently working in Mangaluru through direct appointment. A request to allow the outsourced employees to continue with their work has been submitted for the third time – Sachin Kumar, Backward Classes Welfare Department Officer, DK

The officials have passed the order that the outsourced employees should not report back to work. Removing them from the work without considering the fact that they have given their service for 9 years at low wages in not correct – Gajanana, Backward Class, Outsourced Employee
