Mangaluru: The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) had launched “Swacchta Pakhwada” to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
As part of the drive, undertaken from September 16 to October 2, NMPT had undertaken a slew of programmes ranging from ‘Swacchta Abhiyan’ on port premises, market areas (APMC Baikampady), Thannirbavi beach, Menakaliya village, to activities creating awareness among schoolchildren, street hawkers, port employees and villagers of displaced community.
Street plays were organized both within and outside the port premises, to spread the message of shunning the use of single-use plastic products. Towards this end the port is in the process of procuring jute bags for distribution among the colony dwellers, to stop the use of single-use plastic bags in the colony market area.
Elocution and painting competitions were held for children from Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1 and NMPT School. A medical camp was also organized on this occasion.
NMPT has remained at the forefront of Swacchta Abhiyan and has bagged the award for being the cleanest among the 12 major ports of the country for two consecutive years.
The Swacchta Pakhwada received active support from the port users and other port fraternity members.
The Swacchta Pakhwadadrive will culminate with a walkathon on October 2. It will be followed by a beach cleaning programme at Panambur Beach.
