Udupi: In the last 7 days, around 4,054 MT of sand has been extracted within the CRZ limits of the district.
Sand mining has been started at Uppoor of Swarna river, at Baeiladi and Haradi along Sita river and at Madutonse along Papanashini. Since the fishermen at Padukere have objected sand mining there, sand mining at the sand blocks here has not been started. The mines department has distributed sand mining permit to 78 people till now and 40 people have received the trip sheet.
There are complaints that illegal sand mining is being done at a few places in the district. Officials from the mines department are visiting such spots and conducting inspection, informed officials.
