Mangaluru: Deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh on Monday directed officials to accord top priority to road safety measures in order to ensure safety of motorists and pedestrians and reduce the number of road accidents.

Chairing the district road safety committee meeting Sindhu said that road safety measures such as setting up of permanent barricades in accident-prone areas, filling up of potholes, maintaining streetlights in working condition should be taken up without any further delay.

She further instructed police to ensure that people, especially students are not transported in goods transport vehicles and take stern action against the violators.

“The health department has set up a control room to monitor functioning of government-run ambulances. Private ambulances too should be mapped to this control room through use of GPS, the DC opined.

The regional transport office must suspend driving licenses of motorists whose cases have been recommended for such action after being found violating traffic rules, she said. Aadhar number should be mentioned on the driving licenses to prevent duplicate driving licenses from being used, she said.
