Mangaluru: Indian Hospital and Heart Institute in the city has performed the first Trans-catheter Aortic Valve Replacement/Implementation. (TAVI/TAVR), a new technologically advanced minimally-invasive procedure in cardiology.
The successful procedure was performed on Samuel Daniel (71), resident of Madikeri last week by Chief Interventional cardiologist and managing director of the hospital, Dr. Yusuf Kumble with the cardiology team.
Dr. Kumble has said Samuel was diagnosed with aortic stenosis and is now healthy to be discharged post the procedure.
Explaining about the treatment, Dr. Kumble has said, “TAVI has revolutionized the way elderly heart patients are treated around the world. Indiana hospital is the first in coastal Karnataka to implement this new technology in the healthcare sector.”
Samuel Daniel was advised for open heart surgery by a hospital for his condition and approached Indiana Hospital for a second opinion. When the procedure of TAVI was explained by the Cardiology team, Samuel and his family agreed for this treatment considering the risk involved in it.
The hospital has written to Prime Minister of India to reduce the GST to reduce the procedure cost of around 15 Lakh with TAVI made in India.
