Bengaluru: In the backdrop of the arrest of six SDPI activists, plotting to murder Hindu leaders during a pro-CAA event in the city, BJP leaders Jagadish Shettar and B Sriramulu called for a ban on the outfit.

State Health Minister Sriramulu accused the Congress of trying to disrupt peace in the state, with the support of SDPI and PFI, whenever they lose power. He said that he will bring up the demand seeking a ban on SDPI and PFI during the Karnataka Assembly session.

He further added that the party leaders, including himself and Yediyurappa, had earlier too met Rajnath Singh, the then Home Minister in Delhi and submitted a memorandum to ban SDPI and PFI. Sriramulu was an MP at that time.

Earlier in the day, Jagadish Shettar too called for a ban on SDPI while claiming that their involvement in anti-social activities has been proved now.

Briefing about the arrests made Bhaskar Rao, Bengaluru Commissioner of Police said, “There were 6 people belonging to SDPI, who were here to carry out attacks on leaders supporting CAA. These people were being paid Rs 10,000 from their handlers to create ruckus here. Now this will be handled by the Anti-Terror unit.”

A case has been registered against arrested SDPI supporters under relevant Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Bengaluru Police is constituting a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) to handle this case.
