Udupi: Legislative Council’s Applications Committee had an extensive discussion at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on the implementation of a project to get Varahi river’s water to Udupi city.

The project, planned two years ago, plans to get water from the river at Bharatkal in Kundapura taluk through pipelines. En route to Udupi, the project also intends to provide water to almost 19 villages. The project would cost almost Rs 300 crores.

Water to the city is supplied from a dam near Baje on the Swarna river. However, the river dries up in summer and the water stored in the reservoir is used which is not enough.

The meeting was chaired by MLC S L Dharme Gowda, Chairman of the Applications Committee and other members of the Committee too were present.
