Mangaluru: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to repair the 68-year-old arch bridge over the Falguni river at Kuloor on the National Highway 66.

NHAI has already written to the district administration to stop vehicular traffic through the bridge for at least ten days from February 20. District officials and traffic police officials will hold a meeting with NHAI to finalise the dates.

The proposal to build a new bridge at a cost of Rs 66 crore is currently at NHAI office waiting for approval. As the construction of the new bridge will take 2-3 years, NHAI decided to repair the old bridge for now. The cost of the repairs of the old bridge is estimated to be Rs 38 lakhs.

During the repair works the traffic will be diverted to the new bridge. The traffic coming from Udupi will be diverted right to the new bridge and after crossing the bridge it will be diverted left back to the road leading to the flyover.

“NHAI has asked for traffic restrictions for a few days to repair the old arch bridge at Kuloor in a letter. Due to the need for traffic diversions for the repairs, a meeting will be held with Traffic Police within a few days and the alternative arrangement will be notified,” said Sindhu B. Rupesh, Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada district
