Davanagere: A temple dedicated to the Ucchangiyellamma goddess located at Ucchangidurga near Harappanahalli village of the district was razed with an earthmover on Saturday, February 29.
The demolition of the temple was ordered by the Supreme Court as the temple was on a road in the Ucchangidurga village and hence was obstructing traffic.
The tehsildar and some police personnel were present during the demolition.
It is alleged that the temple has ancient origins and did attract objection to its demolition by the locals. However, the district administration and police officials convinced the locals to yield.
